Craig Burton: The State of Blogging Sucks

  • Fitz · 11 months ago
It looks like you linked to an out-of-date help article for Blogger. Did you see this: http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=97...
  • craigburton · 11 months ago
I did see that. I also got a note from blogger saying that their documentation was behind the actual functionality of blogger. I will point to that link presently.

(re-posting now that you're on Disqus)

Craig - Thanks for pointing this out. I'd like to correct a few things about Blogger - this is a case where our features got out in front of our documentation. (Which is better than the alternative, but still not ideal.) In any event, several months ago Blogger did release an export feature - this exports the entire blog (settings, template, posts, comments) into an Atom file that can then be seamlessly imported into a new Blogger blog. If staying with Blogger isn't your thing, we'd all shed a tear for losing you but our Data Liberation Front team in Chicago has open sourced the "Google Blog Converters" that will convert this exported file into the right import format - for LiveJournal, Movable Type, or WordPress. (http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2009/01/g...) In fact, those same libraries will work just as well moving from any of those formats to any of the others. We at Google feel pretty strongly about this (as you do, and should) this is your data. While I hope that this makes you feel a bit better about our approach, we're of course open to your suggestions about what we could do better.

Well in my own opinion disqus is much better than typepad, yesterday when I checked my disqus account I was surprise for they did some changes well I think disqus is really making some ways to serve for a better service

I agree, disqus is a ton better than typepad. I only recently discovered it but I really like it.

Another option with Blogger is to use [s]ftp publishing and publish your Blogger blog at your own web hosting provider. This is the #1 reason that I use Blogger. Also one of the reasons that I use Dreamhost (as you do) is because of their great backup and restore options. I also have a copy of each of my blog posts as an email message thanks to Blogger's option of emailing each Blog post (and comment) to an email address of your choice. Hooray for lots of backups!

I just moved a photoblog from typepad to a hosted wordpress site (http://blog.karensphoto.com). I was also shocked at the very limited export capabilities of Typepad. Even though all of the images in the posts were uploaded and hosted via Typepad, none of that content was exported, just the raw URL in the post text. The URL formats were also inconsistent (I'm guessing they changed their image scheme at some point). I wrote some ruby scripts to help extract and migrate the images. The script and instructions are at http://blog.impressivearray.com/past/2009/3/18/.... Hopefully someone else can make use of them and save a lot of time.

I think the state of blogging sucks because of the amount of spammy blogs that are running on the internet these days. These people infringe all sorts of intellectual rights and other copyrights, many post spam to earn some cheap bucks and this is leading to a mass of useless junk on the net..your article could have highlighted this point also...but one thing good is that people with knowledge about things can share them on a larger platform

I think support is the most crucial factor as in whether a company can be successful or not. Word of mouth marketing is really powerful and word of mouth complaints are deadly.

If Wordpress say that they make backups, but you cannot get access to them then what's the point in haviung backups!? I tend to not go with hosted services like Blogger or Wordpress because of such problems, and also the feeling of being tied in to their sites. Hosting your own wordpress blog is definitely the way to go. This way you can make sure there are backups and you have no limits to what you can do/change on your blog.

After reading this I thought I would check out the WordPress backup options that I have as I am still quite new to blogging. I have seen that I can export all of my posts, pages, categories, comments and tags; but it does leave me worried that I cannot backup my uploaded images or any of the blog settings to make it easier to re-establish if disaster were to strike. Time to start looking for a hosted solution I think.

What the support page doesn’t tell you is that you don’t have a backup of the database that Typepad uses for your blog. Typepad “renders” a page from its database everytime a page is requested. You can only back up that text from renders. This sucks.

    Thanks
  • Giochi · 3 months ago

The best solution I have seen so far is to find a service provider that will host your wordpress blog and archive the database for you. You must also do an off-line backup and store backups of the database—not just the posts and pages—of your blog.
